Apartment Near Pennsylvania Hospital
While Pennsylvania Hospital is a nationally recognized health facility that embraces innovation and modern technology, it is also a hub of history. A Waterfront I apartment near Pennsylvania Hospital allows history buffs to be immersed in the campus’ fascinating backstory, while also having quick and convenient access to a leading employer and center of care.
Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 by one of Philadelphia’s most famous pioneers, Benjamin Franklin, who partnered with Dr. Thomas Bond on the venture. It was the nation’s first public hospital, founded under the mission of providing free, quality healthcare to Philadelphians. Construction on the current building wrapped up in 1756. Over the years, the hospital treated victims of epidemics as well as of wars, including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Spanish-American War. Pennsylvania Hospital doctors also traveled overseas to treat patients injured in World War I and II. The hospital has continuously grown and expanded, both in size and scope, adding new wings and specialties to meet the changing needs of Philadelphians.
Today, Pennsylvania Hospital is a forward-thinking health facility, but employees and visitors alike can glimpse its early history in every visit. Tours are offered of the hospital’s surgical amphitheater, the first of its kind in the nation, where physicians in training and members of the public alike used to observe operations, which were conducted by the light of the amphitheater before electricity was incorporated into the building. Its library, the first medical library in the nation, which dates to 1762, now contains more than 13,000 volumes. When visitors are done exploring the inside of the building, they can wander the public grounds, which contain a range of herbs and plants that would have been used as medicines during the time of the hospital’s founding.
