Explore Girard Park

While you will love everything about Waterfront I, there will be time when you just want to take a moment to enjoy the fresh air. Our apartments near Girard Park offer convenient access to many of the area’s open-air green spaces for your enjoyment and relaxation.

Originally owned by Philadelphia philanthropist Stephen Girard, Girard Fountain Park in South Philadelphia was once part of 580 acres of rich farmland. Created in the 1960s, the 0.15-acre pocket park is located at 325 Arch Street, just 10 minutes from Waterfront I. It is open to the public in the daytime and is maintained by the Philadelphia Fire Department. Girard Fountain Park, through a wonderful place to kick back and relax, was once known best for its sculpture, “Penny Benny,” any acrylic statue of Benjamin Franklin that was covered in nearly 80,000 pennies collected from local schoolchildren. After years of deterioration, the statue was moved to city storage in 1996. The city’s public arts agency later commissioned a new piece to replace “Penny Benny.” which was unveiled and dedicated in October 2007. The one-ton, bronze bust of Franklin, entitled “Keys to the community.” is covered with casts of 1,000 keys again collected by local schoolchildren, and contains brass name plates commemorating Philadelphia firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.

Just half a mile from our apartments near Girard Fountain Park, Race Street Pier is a great pot to enjoy sweeping views of the Schuylkill River and the Ben Franklin Bridge. With seating on the terraced promenade, the pier is ideal for picnics, walks, and fun with your dog along the spacious lawn. Though originally built in 1896, today’s Race Street Pier was finished in 2011 with the development of the pier’s two-level layout, complete with a sky promenade and walking paths.

One of the five original open-space parks in Philadelphia, Franklin Square is also one of the city’s favorite recreational destinations. Less than a mile from our rental community, Franklin Square features a beautiful center fountain, the Parx Liberty Carousel, the Philly Mini Golf Course, and the well-renowned SquareBurger, open from 11:30 a.m. to the park’s closing. An ideal sport for social gatherings and private events, Franklin Square is also a wonderful and convenient place to spend a lazy afternoon.
